Kingfell Consulting - Design

Expertise, an enviable track record, and a solutions-driven approach that incorporates the latest innovations in fire engineering means that our clients consistently receive a first-rate service.

You may be looking for a one-off assessment or advice on a large and complex fire strategy or design, a new project or an existing facility. We bring a distinctive approach, balancing specialist knowledge and an understanding of the risks and consequences, with the commercial advantages and financial realities, to deliver the best value conformant solution.

We adopt a risk based approach, employing performance-based fire engineering techniques to drive our designs. The methodology uses fire engineering principles based on the BS 7974 and associated documents. A key element of the fire system design is undertaking a fire risk assessment of each area within larger properties, with an emphasis on continuous fire risk assessment. The historical nature of some buildings present a number of challenges; however Kingfell is experienced in devising appropriate solutions for complex buildings of any age.

Q: What types of fire systems are there?
A: Most people are familiar with automatic fire alarm systems and sprinklers but depending on the fire safety objectives of the building consideration should be given to additional protection from gas suppression, water mist and passive fire protection systems. Kingfell have specialist fire engineers that can advise on the most cost effective solution for your premises and business needs and provide a full design, installation and commissioning service as required.

Q: Why do I need a fire alarm system?
A: The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires that suitable and sufficient means for raising an alarm in the event of a fire are provided within premises. This can range from a simple manual system to a complex automatic alarm and detection system. Depending on your fire safety objectives a complex system may be required to ensure ongoing business continuity by protecting your property and assets as well as providing adequate life safety cover. Our specialist designers and Fire Engineers can advise on both the regulatory requirements and protecting your business.

Q: What protection does a fire alarm system provide?
A: British Standard 5839 Part 1 details the design objectives for both life safety (Category L systems) and for property protection (Category P systems). Many building occupiers do not understand which category of system has been installed in their premises and whether it satisfies its fire safety objectives. Simple systems can be designed for manual operation only, with fire alarm call points being strategically located around the premises, up to complex systems that have automatic detectors located in all areas of the building. For property protection remote monitoring of the system when the premises are unoccupied is a critical factor.

Q: How do I know a fire alarm design meets my requirements?
A: Throughout the whole design process Kingfell have experienced engineers that will work with you to determine and specify a system that meets your fire safety objectives. Kingfell are an approved LPC1014 company which ensures quality throughout the whole design, installation and commissioning process.
